Not to be outdone by our list of WTF Sega ads, Nintendo themselves has quite the library of head scratching ads. From over the top dance numbers promoting puzzle games, to toddlers screaming at adults for losing at Zelda, some of these commercials just make absolutely no damn sense. Granted most of them are in Japanese, but still. Scouring the big old internets for crazy Nintendo ads yielded so many results, I've split the best of the best into two parts. Keep reading to see which ones made the cut in Part I.
Paper Mario:
So here we have Mario on vacation. Relaxing on the beach, enjoying orange juice at a fancy party, hitting the links and the tennis courts....then all of a sudden his eyes enrage with a fury like he’s never seen and he’s off to kick some major ass in 2D on your N64. Um, what?
Super Mario World:
Who knew Mario was such a song and dance man? Perhaps this was foreshadowing the future Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix?
Mario Kart DS:
For as silly as this is, I love it. It’s fun. If there were a new Mario Bros. sitcom, a spiritual successor to the Super Show, I’d demand these guys play the Brooklyn plumbers. Also, it’s impossible not to love the stereotypes, especially the American. “Oh no! Come on!” *wink*
Dr. Mario:
Once upon a time in the early 1990’s, Nintendo hired the creative team behind Doogie Howser, M.D. and a band incredibly influenced by the Spin Doctors to make a commercial for Dr. Mario. I guess when advertising a puzzle game, anything goes. Anything, of course, includes scat-yelling viruses and a music video mentality.
Super Mario Bros. 2/The Legend of Zelda:
Yet another Nintendo commercial that I wouldn’t mind being turned into a sitcom. It’s sort of like My Two Dads, but with only one dad, and lots of yelling. It’s also interesting to see two of Nintendo’s biggest titles advertised by showing off in-game failure.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past:
The Japanese Juilliard School of Performing Arts now presents The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Please Link, don't hurt 'em.
