Review: And Yet It Moves (PC/Mac)

Indie games.  They can be hit or misses.  But beautiful and amazing things can happen when an indie game gets it right.  Flow, Braid, Fieldrunners, Everyday Shooter, and DeBlob all got it right.  Can And Yet It Moves join the ranks of excellent indie titles?  If you read my review you might just find out.  Then again, maybe not.  But you probably will.  Though I'm not going to promise anything.

AYIM can be defined in one word: new.  Platforming has been done before, 2D platforming even more so, and 2D puzzle platforming is rather common genre as well, but AYIM manages to take these familiar genres and turn them on their head.  Literally.  To navigate the game's crinkled paper environments you'll need to use your ability to flip the world clockwise or counter-clockwise to climb over trees, rocks, etc. that get in your way.  But that isn't the only time you'll need this unique ability, because at the end of every level is a pseudo-boss you must defeat before you can reach the next level.  The controls are solid, but flipping the world can take some getting used to.  Even after playing the game for a while I still had trouble remembering which arrow key turned the world clockwise, though that could just be a problem on my part.

The bosses (a term I’ll use lightly) are usually fairly straightforward, and they always require you to use the World Flipper (that’s what I’m calling the ability to spin the world) to defeat your foe.  One of my favorite bosses was a lizard in the cave world that was blocking the exit out of the cave.  Apparently, lizards don’t like bats (but then again, besides Batman, who does?) and it just so happened that I had several bats in a nearby room. To defeat this lizard I had to flip the world, which caused the gravity to change, moving the bats (who always fly upwards until they cling to the ceiling).  After flipping the world enough times I was able to get three bats to attack the lizard, allowing me to pass.  This is just one example of the many clever puzzles found in AYIM, others have you getting a banana to a monkey, guiding boulders to break a giant spider web, etc.

For a game with only one real gameplay mechanic, AYIM never got boring.  Granted, this isn't the time of game you'll be playing for hours at a time (unless you're a real puzzle fanatic).  As you progress through the game the scenery changes, almost seamlessly, to keep things fresh.  For example, the game starts off in a cave-like environment before changing into a jungle setting, and seeing the scenery change while in the middle of a level is actually quite cool.

One of the biggest draws of this game is its distinctive art style, which consists of environments made up of crumpled paper cut outs.  The protagonist, who looks like a rough pencil line-drawing on white paper really stands out from the world he travels in and when he falls from a ledge he explodes into several small pieces of paper (this is something that happens often).  The music matches the game’s unique personality by being completely unobtrusive while still being an excellent backdrop.

There’s a good amount of content in the game to make it replayable as well as worth its asking price ($10).  There are seventeen levels, a Competition mode, and unlockable achievements.  If you have the game on a computer that’s used by more than one person you can even create, edit, and delete multiple profiles, each with their own customizeable settings, so multiple people can play on a single computer.  If you find yourself enjoying a particular level, once you beat it the level becomes available in the main menu so you can play it as many times as you’d like.

Other than some truly frustrating sections, AYIM does platforming extremely well.  The puzzles are clever, the world looks great, and this is a game that has a truly interesting look and feel.  If you’re looking for a story heavy game this isn’t for you, but if you want a solid, cheap, and highly entertaining puzzle game then with And Yet It Moves, you can’t go wrong.

Yay! Stunning art style, clever puzzles, and because I’m an achievement whore I’ll give a double YAY! for the unlockable achievements!

Nay! Some Extremely frustrating puzzles, and more content would’ve been nice.

For those of you who REALLY hate reading, or only learned to read numbers: 9/10
