When it comes to The Guild, as with most things in life, I'm the proverbial last man to the party. Despite having been nagged by all my friends over the past few years to check out what this web show had to offer, I just never found the time or had the motivation. On a whim I decided I'd snag the recently released The Guild: Seasons 1 & 2 and see if I could figure out what all the fuss was about. Have you ever have one of those moments where you're embarrased you didn't listen to your friends earlier? The Guild has totally turned into one of those for me.
The Guild is the story of a group of MMO players who decide to step out of the virtual world and meet face-to-face. They're awkward, they're nerdy, they're obsessive -- they're everything you'd want in a great satire of geek culture. Despite originally airing in 3-8 minute episodes, the series has found the time to offer up a great deal of character development for each of the Guild members. Clara, the stay-at-home mom who keeps her kids fenced like farm animals so that she can play all day without interruption. Vork, the meticulously game-obssessed guild leader who lives by cashing in his dead grandfather's social security checks and digs for treasure in other people's trash. Zaboo, who confuses online flirting with real world romance and somehow shows us the softer side of scary stalker love -- and this is only half the guild.
No matter how much you may enjoy her guildmates, the real reason to watch The Guild is Codex. Played by series creator Felicia Day, Codex is the central figure in the series. Like Felicia, she's the epitome of a real world, utterly adorable geek girl. We're not talking that fake, Hollywood, Drew Barrymore/Amanda Bynes "look at me I'm so clumbsy" type geek thing. We're talking "bag of Fritos and Star Trek marathon as a panty remover." Felicia, if you're reading this, try to take that as the compliment it's intended as. We at theBBPS, like every other horned-up creature to ever watch The Guild, are madly in love with you.
Codex is every nerd girl we've ever had a crush on. She's awkward, excitable, flaky, obsessive -- she's everything we are, plus a few extra layers of pretty. And remember folks, this is coming from a man who once voted himself prettiest man in 3 counties, so I'm some kind of authority on the subject.
But what if everything I've said so far isn't new to you? What if you've already seen The Guild? What if you're already on to season three? What if you've seen my pictures and already know how damned man pretty I am? Don't worry -- this DVD set still has a ton to offer. Sure it has all 22 episodes from seasons one and two, but it also has a ton of extras. The audio commentary alone is worth the price of admission. Cast interviews that take you behind the origins of the series, audition tapes, table reads -- you're looking at spending a good chunk of time going through everything extra this set has to offer. There's tons of exclusive content on here that no Guild fan should be without.
Like I said earlier -- I'm embarrased that it took me this long to discover how truly laugh-out-loud funny The Guild is. The writing is quick and sharp, the cast is lovable, and the geeky in-jokes and outside references will keep you in stitches. My only crisis is this: do I watch season three online, or do I wait another two years to snag the next DVD and enjoy another marathon session?
YAY! - This is the ultimate in geek programming. There will be times when you're laughing at them because you know someone like that, and time's when you're quietly embarrased because you know it's you. The show is utterly brilliant. Felicia Day could be one of the funniest writers since Webster. NAY! - Some of the acting comes across as a little amateur. Because it's a web show, "Season 1 & 2" only translates to a little over 2 hours. We want more, dammit!
For those of you who really hate reading, or only learned to read numbers: - 9/10
We've embedded a clip of the first episode of the first season above. It should give you a good taste of what the series has to offer. If you love it like we do, be sure to pick up the DVD.
