Usually when a new system launches, there’s nothing to play for months. If you’re lucky, there will be one game that is worth getting, and if you’re the proud owner of a Playstation 3, that game is Resistance: Fall Of Man.
Resistance isn’t an amazing game in the conventional sense. Other than the weapons, the graphics aren’t great, and the cut scenes are down right embarrassing. It’s still, just a first person shooter. It has no ending boss fight. What it does have is fun, and lots of it. To cure the mundane gaming experience that is the beaten dead horse genre of first person shooters, the guys over at Insomniac created an arsenal of weapons to be proud of. You have everything from your run of the mill machine gun with rocket launcher to a gun that if you tag an enemy, you can shoot from the safety of cover, and the rounds will find their way to the selected target. There’s a gun that can shoot through walls and pop out a temporary shield for you to stand behind, so you have cover while standing out in the open. Why, there’s even a rocket launcher that you can stop the movement of the rocket and then redirect its path to hit an intended target. Shake as many sticks as you want, there’s just too much fun.

The game is also surprisingly long. Long enough that if you only have time to pick it up for a few hours a day, you’d be two weeks in before you beat it. After you’ve beat it, feel free to dive in online, because with forty (40!) player online matches, it’s a little crazy. Crazy in a good way. Also, once you beat the game, if you play through again, you can unlock different weapons. Nice little touch to add replay.
There are a few problems with the game. The biggest problem being that as I got further and further into the game, I just wanted to beat it. Doesn’t sound like a bad thing? It is when that’s the only reason I was playing the game. I do chalk some of that up to my rushed playing of the game. I wanted to beat and review it in time for Christmas. I also played this game after playing Gears Of War, and while I was playing Rainbow Six: Vegas, and the cover system they offer has changed the game. The classic FPS formula just doesn’t cut it any more, and feels out dated.
Looking back at the experience as a whole, I did enjoy the game greatly. It just trailed off a little at the end. But, for a launch title, it’s a shining star for Sony. And if you’re not a freak like me, and don’t have the time to just charge through the game, it provides a lot of game play. And you’ll need it, seeing as how there’s nothing worth playing on the PS3 until March. So if you have a PS3, get cozy with Resistance, because as this reviewer sees it, it’s your best and only option for a long time.
