The commercials just keep on coming!
Following the success of my previous “when commercials attack” features,
Part 1: Genesis does what Nintendon’t - Ads from the late 80’s
Part 2: Sony sells Playstation lifestyle - Strange Sony ads
Part 4: Japan Strikes Back! - Bizarre Japanese Ads 2nd Edition
Part 5: You had me at konichiwa (Japan ads 3rd edition),
I decided it was time to go overseas for part three. Japan offered up some choice classic and newer videogame commercials.
I realize it’s easy to make fun of other cultures, and it’s not exactly an “adult” thing to do, but funny is funny.
Make sure to stop back next week for a second edition of “Ads in the Land of the Rising Sun! The new link is here! Right there in the 1st paragraph, Japan Strikes Back!
Unfortunatly, I don’t speak Japanese so translating commercials is not going to happen here. It’s a chance to see some of the strange, bizarre and funny videogame commercials from the Land of the Rising Sun.
If you’re looking for the best spot, it’s at the bottom. I repeat, if you watch just one, make it the last one. But I promise you, they’re all good.
First up, PS2’s karaoke revolution featuring 2 guys dressed up as huge microphones.
Catchy, and indicitive of what you’re going to see here. Lots of singing and yelling, and if women are involved, giggling.
Dreamcast has some fantastic games here in the states. Even more overseas. But we both got Chu Chu Rocket. We however did not get the great commercial to go with it. Dammit
Talk about a song that gets stuck in your head…Chu Chu Rocket…
I grant you, nearly every commercial here could be intoduced with WTF?
But seriously, WTF????? Zelda doing some Michael Jackson dance moves??
There is something so very wrong with this spot. It’s like it’s mocking my childhood.
Remember earlier when I mentioned how these spots have lots of yelling? Here’s the proof. I love how, after mario’s face bursts free from the girls shirt, they all cower in fear of Donkey Kong, who looks turned on and ready to make a move.
Relax girls! DK doesn’t want to rape you, he just wants the Mario toy.
Again with the yelling! geez people bring it down a notch or two.
I love the guy screaming in the poor girls ear at the end.
I think this Sega Saturn spot is cut pretty well, right up until… well… you’ll see
If anyone can explain what Segata Sanshiro is, please email me
Thanks to everyone who mailed in the answer.
By far the best Japanese spot I found. I can’t even begin to explain it. Just please watch it
Can you imagine the amount of shit we’d hear if someone made something like this in the states? Offensive? maybe. Hilarious? Most Definitely
Like this article? Then digg it!

[...] BBPS has compiled a plethora of strange japanese video game commercials not to be missed. Funny how gamers automatically understand that when something is labelled as something funny and japanese, they automatically know that what is to come is the most unusual random sh1t possible. Dancing guys dressed as microphones running down the street? Check. Pencil drawn cats chewing rodents? Check. You will not be disappointed. Check out this Luigi video for Mario Kart… it’s, um, unique… times four. [...]

i DON’T understand why would the mario kart commercial be offensive. kung fu guys and geisha girls are presented everywhere else.

“Lots of singing and yelling, and if women are involved, giggling.”
When you say giggling, did you take that from those 2 women in the foreground? If so, they they represent giggling. They’re there to accentuate the ridiculousness of those 2 men dancing, by standing quietly watching while wind is blowing (to signify how sad those men are).

[...] Because I know what you people want. You don’t want to hear me drivel on about this or that, you want to see those wacky Japanese commercials. Fine. Be that way. I’m hard at work finding the most bizarre stuff out there, and while I’m pretty certain I’ll never beat the Mario Kart DS spot from the first edition of Japanese Ads , I’m pretty confident you’ll like what I got coming.
