Yes, a Tesla coil. The huge bolts of energy are tweaked in real time to produce different tones. Of course these being nerds I’m sure it only took a few minutes to come up with the idea to play the Super Mario theme. Here’s another clip of an outdoor demonstration where they play a few different songs. At about the 1:30 mark they go into the Super Mario “dungeon” theme. The crowd instantly recognizes it… awesome.
