sad but true. Hopefully you didn't buy the PS2 version yet... unless you don't mind the lack of downloads. My advice is to wait and buy it on a next gen system (besides the Wii since it gets no downloads either)

To all those wondering if the game is available seprarately: I was pretty sure that while the game will be available by itself, the peripherals such as drums, microphone, and Rock Band-branded guitar will not. So basically, if you buy the game by itself, you will only be able to play the guitar parts using a GH guitar until the Rock Band peripherals are released individually in 2008.

Hope that makes sense. :)

[...] Update: bits bytes pixels and sprites has an interview with Harmonix where it is noted that packaging regulations (i.e. Canadian boxes must have English and French text) might cause a short delay — though we hardly doubt that would justify four weeks of absence. It should also be noted that the PS2 version of the game is due out December 17 which, if the delay is indeed an error, would explain the origins of the miscommunicated release date.
[...] If you were hoping that competition from “Rock Band” would drive prices lower, don’t hold your breath. Despite the mathematical inconsistencies between price of content on the disc versus downloadable tracks, GH2 DLC sold very well and with “Guitar Hero 3″ breaking sales record there is no real incentive for the price to drop any time soon. As for “Rock Band” DLC, I believe we will see a similar pricing scheme, if not more expensive based on comments a Harmonix rep made with TheBBPS.com. “I don’t know if I can say we’re cheaper or more expensive but remember, where as in other games they adjust the tracks for one or two guitars, in Rock Band it’s vocals, drums, guitar and bass on multiple difficulties. One thing we will do is give the gamer options. You can buy an album, or if you only want one or two tracks you can purchase those items separately.” Sounds like excuses for high prices to me, so bend over and spread ‘em. It’s coming and it ain’t stopping. [...]

[...] I don’t think games need to be tailored to females. I do think however that someone should have looked over the track list at some point and noticed the glaring omission of female singers. I already wasn’t thrilled that the only option will be the complete bundle with all the instruments until an unspecified date in 2008. Add to that the USB hub that will be powered by an AC adapter in order to plug in all of the instruments. And on top of that? The fact that John Riccitiello has already said Rock Band will be in short supply at least until March 2008. [...]

This article seems to imply that it is NOT the case that you will be able to buy just the game by itself this November and play it with your existing Guitar Hero controller. It's not clear to me whether this is true or not. Gamestop.com is still listing the game being released by itself for $59.99 or November 23. It'd be nice if someone could clarify this...

[...] If this report from thebbps is to be believed, Rock Band will only be available in a bundle form this year, with instruments not being sold individually until 2008. The site claims that it has spoken to a Harmonix representative, who has explained that shipping the three separate instruments at launch would cause availability issues and that limited shelf space would force retailers to cut back on the stock of the overall bundle.
[...] October 16, 2007 Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is slated to be released on 10.28.07 which is in a mere 12 days. While I was already leaning towards Guitar Hero III instead of Rock Band, my decision was made final when Rock Band confirmed that only the full bundles would be available until early 2008. From a “BBPS interview with one of the PR members from Harmonix : When Rock Band ships this November it will only be available in one flavor, bundled. Done. Confirmed. When is Harmonix looking to ship the separate components? Early 2008 is the general goal, so EB/GameStop’s leak was correct. [...]

[...] On the gitems not sold separately until 2008 rumors When Rock Band ships this November it will only be available in one flavor, bundled. Done. Confirmed. Although there are a few reasons for this the main seems to be based on retail. Firstly, the components in the bundle are not cheap and thus creating a bundle and three other separate packages (guitar, drums and vocals) would increase costs which could lead to less bundles available at ship. Lastly, although retail partners are confident the title will be successful they are appreciative of the fact that they wonft have to display four reasonably-sized packages in each of their stores. When is Harmonix looking to ship the separate components? Early 2008 is the general goal, so EB/GameStopfs leak was correct. gEarly in development the PlayStation 3 version just didnft look as good [as the X360 version], but we caught it early and now you canft tell the difference.h Having played both, I can tell you they both look fantastic.
"Well this interview was with the PR rep from Harmonix, however, the topic of the game by itself didn’t come up.

Didn’t realize people would actually want that at launch.

If that were the case why not pick GHIII up? "

I was thinking of getting both, because I really, really like Guitar Hero. If I can get bots to play the other parts and turn this into Guitar Hero 2 9/10 or Guitar Hero III Side B, then I would. If they're not selling it alone, well then they don't get my money. That simple.

[...] Speaking to Bits Byets Pixels & Sprites, a Harmonix rep confirmed that Rock Band instruments will not be sold separately from the game until 2008. In other words, if you were planning on buying a copy of the game and a set of drums separately, you’re out of luck. If you want Rock Band this year, you’ll be paying $170 for the whole kit and kaboodle. The rep gave two reasons for this. First, creating multiple bundles would increase costs and lead to fewer bundles being available at launch. Second, retailers aren’t exactly keen to have 3 different (and large) versions of Rock Band clogging their shelf space. [...]

I for one had originally planned to just purchase the game + mic, since I already have a wired guitar, and am not interested in purchasing another. However, since they're forcing another wired guitar down my throat, it's either all or nothing.

I don't know about the whole "forced bundle" thing. When I preordered Rock Band at Gamestop, they asked whether I wanted just the game or the full bundle. I asked for the bundle, and they said it was all coming in at the same time.

Were they misinformed? (I mean, it *is* Gamestop... but yeah.)

[...] Rock Band: no separate instruments until 2008 Speaking to Bits Byets Pixels & Sprites, a Harmonix rep confirmed that Rock Band instruments will not be sold separately from the game until 2008. In other words, if you were planning on buying a copy of the game and a set of drums separately, you're out of luck. If you want Rock Band this year, you'll be paying $170 for the whole kit and kaboodle. The rep gave two reasons for this. First, creating multiple bundles would increase costs and lead to fewer bundles being available at launch. Second, retailers aren't exactly keen to have 3 different (and large) versions of Rock Band clogging their shelf space. The rep also speaks about a few other issues, the most pressing of which is probably DLC pricing, a hot topic among Guitar Hero II fans. The rep is quick to point out that Rock Band tracks require more development than Guitar Hero tracks, as there are more instruments to be dealt with. In other words, we're expecting they won't be cheap, though the rep explains that there are many ways to pick and choose DLC. For instance, whole albums will be available as well as single songs, and there may be special offers for those that purchase multiple tracks. DLC is expected to arrive every week after the game ships through the end of the year, starting with The Who's Who's Next. Finally, the game is expected to have nearly 50 songs on the retail disc, not including bonus unlockables. __________________ put your quarter up brother [...]

Thanks a ton, Xav. This quashed a lot of questions I had, and even some I didn't. I don't recall a previous announcement about the bundle being the only purchasing available, but it's definitely good to know (though I REALLY want a wireless guitar). BTW, maybe I misread, but which Metallica album is Rock Band using? =)
