Final Fantasy IV DS Media Blowout

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

GameTrailers posted this nice preview of Final Fantasy IV DS sometime yesterday. I have to admit I’ve been looking forward to this one for a long time now. As you may know, Final Fantasy IV DS is a full remake of the original and I have to agree with this preview in saying that I don’t even consider this a port. It really does look, sound and feel like a brand new game. After the jump, you can view a side-by-side comparison of Final Fantasy IV DS and the one from the GameBoy Advance. The differences are staggering. Anyways, I’m off to play it now. Remember to make the jump for a glimpse of the aforementioned comparison, the opening cinematic and a few other videos. Enjoy!

E3 2008 Trailer: Fallout 3 Footage Bonanza

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

Fallout 3 has got to be one of the most hotly anticipated titles ever for me. This trailer furthers my belief that the series is in good hands with Bethesda. The trailer starts in typical Fallout fashion with some sort of ad (this one features Mr. Handy), zooming out to show a devasted landscape. After that, it goes on to show a bloody mess of a montage of gameplay footage with a cameo by Dogmeat. I just wish we could see some more of the RPG aspect of it.

The battle scenes, though gorgeous, leave me wondering how, exactly, it will function. I seem to recall hearing that the battle system would be flexible between a sort of turn based-type system which allows you to target body parts (like the originals) and the run-and-gun style gameplay that dominates this trailer. Anyways, I’ll have to go do my homework on this while you watch the trailer. Hope you enjoy it!

UPDATE: There’s some gameplay footage after the jump that shows exactly how the combat system works, as well as some other footage that should satisfy your curiosity for now. Those classic sound effects have got me so excited. Can’t wait!

L33t Str33t Boys’ “Yuri the Only One for Me”

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

I saw this at last night’s Video Games Live performance here in Austin. This was on before the show started and I thought I’d share it with you in case you haven’t seen it. Check it out!

In case you’re wondering, VGL was really amazing and fun. If it’s coming to your town, it’s definitely worth a look.

Populous To Populate Popular DS at E3, XSEED and Marvelous Announce Line Up

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

Earlier today, XSEED Games and Marvelous Entertainment made public their lineup for E3. In the process, it was revealed that XSEED Games will be showing off their previously announced re-imagination of the classic Populous as, you guessed it, Populous DS. You’ll be able to play as one of five gods and wield their elemental powers. XSEED Games promises an extensive single player campaign for you to wreak havoc upon all who oppose your cult tribe. Populous DS will also have a 4 player feature allowing you to screw each other over in ways that would make the Olympian gods proud. All in all, I think it might be fun. I loved Populous on the SNES and Populous: The Beginning for the PC. I think it would be pretty sweet to have Populous on the go. Hopefully it doesn’t come out to be quite as cumbersome as SimCity DS.

As mentioned, the two companies have a slew of other games they will be showing off including a new Rune Factory, Valhalla Knights and the new KORG DS-10. Check out their lineup after the jump.

1942 Happening All Over Again On July 24

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

Remember 1942? I do. I played the hell out of it back in the day. Now, the remake of that iconic title has finally got a release date set for July 24, 2008 on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. Actually, ‘remake’ is not the right word. It’s definitely a new entry, but it will take a lot from the previous entries of the 194X series. Anyways, 1942: Joint Strike will feature a full 3D engine that looks pretty good from the screenshots and videos that I’ve seen.

That’s about all there is to it other than it will also have a 2-player online co-op mode and a new soundtrack by Norihiko Hibino (Metal Gear). Good times will be had. Any takers?

Wii-kly Virtual Console Update: 07/07/08

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

WiiWare and the Virtual Console both get a single new addition to their respective catalogs. For WiiWare, which I have yet to download anything from, we have SPOGS Racing for 1,000 Wii Points. That, as you may have already guessed, is a racing game. Not much more to be said about that.

As for the Virtual Console, King of the Monsters (NEOGEO, 900 Wii Points) storms on to the scene with massive monsters fighting each other, taking down buildings along the way. Taking a note from wrestling, the game requires you to wear down your opponent so that you may pin him/her/it down for a three-count to win the match. That’s about all I have for this afternoon. If you would like more information, make the jump.

Chrono Trigger Heading To The DS

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

I wasn’t going to start back up with my writing quite yet, but this got me all excited! Well, sort of. Square-Enix have announced that Chrono Trigger is coming to the DS. When I saw that subject line in my inbox, the first thing I thought was a Final Fantasy III/IV style remake. Alas, I was wrong. It is just a port that supports dual screens. It seems that the only new addtion(s) to the game will be a “brand new dungeon and a Wireless Play mode.” I have no clue what the Wireless Play mode will do, but it will be interesting (I hope) to see what it turns out to be. Anyways, I love this game, but chances are very good I won’t buy it and just continue to whip out my old SNES cart or PS1 version of it whenever I want to play.

So there you have it. Will you buy it when it becomes available this holiday season? I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has never played it before or doesn’t already have a copy of it. This classic, at least in my mind, can still give a lot of the RPGs of this generation a good run for their money.

By the way, in case you want all the dirty details, make the jump. Otherwise, take a trip to the Chrono Trigger DS website to stare at a clock (which really does tell the time) and some rotating gears. It’s a damn shame the legal team at Square-Enix put a stop to the Chrono Trigger Resurrection project….
