Review: Hail to the Chimp (PS3/360)

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

I’m a big believer in comedy games. There haven’t been many, but it’s an interesting concept. We’ve already established that a game can make you cry (mission accomplished, Trip) — but can a game make you laugh? It’s the question Wideload Games poses in Hail to the Chimp, a party game that claims to be rife with political comedy. But is it really a rib tickler, or should it be yanked off the stage with a Vaudevillian hooked cane?

Siliconera interviews the designer behind “Mushroom Men” for the Wii

It’s a game I sadly missed during E3 (at Gamecock’s EIEIO festival) but it was so early in it’s life cycle there wasn’t much to see besides concept art anyways. However, my interest has remained high.

Siliconera (or the other site I write for) has an interview up with lead designer for Red Fly Studio (the developer behind Mushroom Men), Ryan Mattson all about the upcoming Wii title!

Choice byte:

“The Wii Remote and Nunchuck need to be a usable interface to the game and, more specifically, to the combat. We’re really trying to get players to move away from waggling the Wii Remote to attack. So while you can waggle, and the character reacts to the waggle, there is much more incentive not to with a system we’re working on which allows attacks to be primed (for increased damage, and combos) before they’re executed. The attacks become deliberate. Combat, at a higher level, involves more strategy. And we’re having a lot of fun with this right now.”

Gamecock to publish Pirates vs. Ninja Dodgeball

Gamecock, the free-wheeling game group behind upcoming games like Demetium: The Ward, Hail to the Chimp and Mushroom Men will be publishing Blazing Lizards‘ upcoming internet meme cum video game.

Not much is known yet about the game, except that it will be downloadable on consoles in the first quarter of ‘08 and will have more teams included. Cowboys maybe?

I’m still on the fence about Blazing Lizards copyrighting an internet meme like the Pirates vs. Ninjas debate, but until someone makes a lolcat or chocolate rain game I’m not gonna get too worried.

Hail to the Chimp… baby

Shop smart… shop S-Mart! Alright that actually has nothing to do with this clip but I can’t resist a good Army of Darkness reference every now and again.

Hail to the Chimp is a new party-game-esque fighter from the guys that made Stubbs the Zombie. Politicially charged game with cartoon fighting animals? Sign me up.

It’s due out for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in spring of ‘08. I’m hoping to take a look at it during Gamecock’s EIEIO show they’re throwing during the Mini-E3 in a few weeks.
