First Look: Elebits DS Screens

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

Remember way back when? It was a different time. The birds were singing, the bees were buzzing, we brought you news of Elebits DS. I like to call it 18 hours ago. Well here we are, less than a day later, and with a new Elebits update!

The kind folks at Konami were nice enough to share some screens with us, and I’ve got to admit that things are looking a little different. I was expecting something akin to a port of the first one, b this looks more like a complete overhaul. It almost looks like it has that Pokemon vibe.

Could a move to the DS improve Elebits?

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

Earlier today Konami announced Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero for the Nintendo DS. A sequel to Konami’s 2006 somewhat well recieved Wii title Elebits, Kai and Zero will have the player hunting for hidden creatures in order to power any number of devices and solve some fairly rudimentary puzzles. It’s a fun idea, but for a lot of us the Wii version fell flat. Despite having a high cuteness factor, things became repetitive quickly and the controls needed a lot of fine tuning. They’re big complaints — but couldn’t they both be solved by a move to the DS?

The pick up/put down nature of portable play might help reduce that repetitive factor, and the idea behind the controls should translate a lot more smoothly to the DS than it did the Wii. There’s a certain level of precision that the wiimote was just lacking early on — definitely a situation that could call on the stylus.

An interesting development in my book — definitely one to watch. Expect it this fall.

Silent Hill Having Homecoming Party

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

OK, not really, but Silent Hill V (probably my most anticipated title other than Mario Kart Wii) has finally received a name and a launch window. The name, if you haven’t heard already, is Silent Hill: Homecoming. Intriguing? I think it is. Here’s a snippet of the story for you:

The story follows Alex Shepherd, returning to his hometown of Shepherd’s Glen to investigate the sudden disappearance of his brother. From Shepherd’s Glen to Silent Hill, Alex must face the darkest of horrors in order to find his brother. Struggling with his own grip on reality, Alex must unravel the mystery behind his nightmares, discover the truth behind his brother’s disappearance, and confront the evil lurks in the seemingly empty streets of Silent Hill.

The title is currently slated for a end of September release across Europe. That means we might get it a tad earlier or even later than our overseas brethren. Hopefully earlier. Either way, I’m super excited. Are you?

The full dirty rundown awaits you after the jump.

Assassin’s Solid “The Best Gag Today”

by the hammer of Ryan Hewson!

Looks like Kojima Productions and UbiSoft collaborated for a little April 1 gag.

It’s kind of funny. The joke, that is. But more to the point, the clip contains some mindfuckingly spectacular Metal Gear Solid 4 gameplay that sort of overshadows the funny, in the end.

My thought process went something like: “Heh, that’s cool, I wonder how they got that in thOMIGOD HOLYFUCK RUN RUN RUUUUUUUUN” etc.

Solid Snaku Wallpapertaku

MGS4 wallpaper

It’s probably impossible to follow Dan’s amazing BioShock find, but this wallpaper from the recently-opened Metal Gear Solid 4 teaser site is definitely worthwhile. Ever since Portable Ops, the series has adopted this really striking hi-contrast icon style that I can’t get enough of. (Was happy to see that they have sizes up to 1920×1200 at that link.)

Where’s his Old Snake moustache? It’s a mystery.

Look At All That Sony Swag

Sony came out with a veritable cornucopia of announcements today. The timing is a little odd, coming as it does just after GDC. The vagaries of Sony PR are confounding and mysterious.

First up is the news that there shall be an 80GB Playstation 3 bundle which includes Metal Gear Solid 4 and a Dual Shock 3 controller*. That is one mighty bundle of gaming bliss. Alongside that, we learn that MGS4 will be hitting our shores on June 12, and the DS3 controller will be available in April for (a slightly cringeworthy) $55 USD. Thankfully most of the big games for PS3 have already been patched to support the rumble features.

Furthermore, those who engage in that damnable custom of pre-ordering shall be reserved a guaranteed place in the upcoming beta trial of Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer-only title set in the MGS universe. (No word on how exactly one secures that valuable perk yet.)

And finally we have a pretty sweet new PSP bundle – the God of War: Chains of Olympus game, a copy of Superbad on (snicker) UMD, and a voucher for a free download of Syphon Filter: Combat Ops. Oh, and the unit itself has been tastefully dipped in the blood of your fallen enemies. Mr. Happy himself, Kratos, is silk-screened onto the back, in a manner similar to the white Star Wars PSP bundle with Darth.

* Where’d they get the idea that a special edition bundle shouldn’t be a puke green console, and actually include the game it’s named after? That’s just crazy.

Metal Gear Solid 4 demo next month?

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

Although no official date has been confirmed, we all know that the release of MGS4 is right around the corner. Taking that into consideration it should come as no surprise that a demo should be even nearer in our futures. According to the latest issue of PSW UK, we should see a demo up on the Playstation Store sometime in the next month that features a Middle East war zone level, likely the same one we saw in the gameplay demo last year.
