KOTOR MMO confirmed. My head explodes.

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

Knights of the Old Republic was exquisite. Bioware created a brilliant new universe within the existing Star Wars license by using the D&D ruleset and a hell of a lot of imagination. You’d be hard pressed to argue against it being the greatest Star Wars story ever told. Sure the Obsidian delivered sequel left a lot to be desired (more specifically, an ending), but all in all it’s a franchise we’ve been praying someone would get back to. For years now it’s been rumored that LucasArts and Bioware had teamed up again to bring us the third installment in the series, a KOTOR MMO. It’s officially gone from rumor to reality. KOTOR MMO is coming. I need to change my dipey.

From the reveal on Portfolio.com;

In an interview at E3 this week, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello said that EA is working on the next version of Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic, and it will most certainly have a massively multiplayer online component to it.

“We’ve got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development,” said Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. “And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about — in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it.”

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumored Knights of the Old Republic Online? “Yes,” he said.

Retro Review: The Secret of Monkey Island, still my favorite game of all time

by the hammer of Dan Zuccarelli!

We all love making lists, whether it be about our top 5 THIS or our least favorite THAT. I’d always say my favorite video game of all time was The Secret of Monkey Island. Even though I had only played it once through when it first came out (in 1993), most of my memories were based on that one play through. I’d picked up the CD-Rom version of the game about a year ago (the original came on a few diskettes) and just kind of held onto the game. I just wanted the box and game in my collection, even though I had no Windows machine to play it on.

Fast-forward a year and I’m thinking about buying a new Windows laptop (to go with my Apple desktop). I buy a semi-top-of-the-line machine that can run Half-Life 2 at full res 60-fps blah blah blah. And what’s the first thing I install? The Secret of Money Island. Continue Reading »

Sam & Max headed to the Wii this fall!

by the hammer of Dan Zuccarelli!

Ok, now here’s some news I can get behind. I’ve never made it a secret of how much I love old school point and click adventure games, most notably the LucasArts classics. If their done well they’re incredibly engaging and some of the best ones can be damn fantastic story wise.

Sam & Max hit the road was one of those classics. And luckily, the dynamic duo (better known as the Freelance Police) has made a comeback in the form of “episodes” delivered on a month to month basis.

The point and click style of the game and cartoony graphics are a natural fit for the Wii-mote, and in a great spot of news for those without PC’s now you’ll be able to enjoy the games on the console! If you’ve been missing out on the Sam & Max train, get on board when it’s Wii-ified…. you won’t be sorry.

No official release date yet, just Fall 2008.

Full press release after the jump! Continue Reading »

Finally, a real reason to get an iPhone…

…Now it’ll run ScummVM!! Which means it’s yet another place I can play Secret of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle (amongst other classics). This, ladies and gentleman, is awesome.

Not only because for every person that plays a LucasArts adventure game the world becomes a cooler place, but for the dedication of the ScummVM team. Hopefully one of these days LucasArts will realize what they’re missing out on and we’ll get some re-releases/updates/sequels.

Till then, to those with an iPhone… get downloading.

Grim Fandango Trailer

Just because I’m in the mood.

Actually, the game isn’t that pricey on eBay, and installs and plays just fine on Vista. If you’ve never played it, do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

I have such a soft spot for classic Lucasasrts games. I know I mention this fact quite often but I just can’t help myself.

Take for instance this particular time I was reading a story on Destructoid and spied these cosplay pics of Grim Fandango and the Evil Purple Tentacle. Funny thing is this isn’t the first time we’ve had pics of tentacle cosplay pics!

Force Unleashed: A look into Star Wars character development

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

forceunleashed.jpg

Over at FileFront they’ve posted up the latest developer diary from the team at LucasArts working on the upcoming Star Wars title Force Unleashed.  For those of you not in the know, Force Unleashed takes place in the years between the two trilogies and puts you in the role of Darth Vader’s apprentice.  You’re tasked with traveling through the galaxy and eliminating the last remaining Jedi.

Despite a piss poor track record with Star Wars games (KOTOR being the obvious exception), I’m really looking forward to Force Unleashed.  It seems to have a lot of potential.

Besides — the Wii version will let you use the wiimote as a lightsaber.  Who doesn’t want that?

If you want a look into the character development in Force Unleashed, hop over to FileFront and check out the video.
