PS3 firmware v2.2 is live

by the hammer of Ryan Hewson!

Previously, on Firmware Stories: hit this link for all the details.

I’m curious to see if the rumoured blu-ray to PSP portable copy features are in there as well. Some studios are mulling the idea of including a standard-def PSP/iPod version of the film on the BD that you can transfer to whichever device.

Review: Bejeweled (mobile)

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

bejeweled-titlescreen.gifI’ve never really been one for mobile phone games — not because I don’t like them, but because I’ve never really had a phone that can run anything better than Snake. That’s why, after a few months with my new phone, it finally dawned on me that I could run some titles of note on this little thing.

But where to begin? With the granddaddy of all casual games of course - Bejeweled.

Cooking Mama for your phone

by the hammer of Dan Zuccarelli!

Perhaps the cell phone is the best place for the Cooking Mama game, it’s simple mini-puzzle style seems perfectly suited for the phone. If nothing else you can pretend you’re making the meals that are being delivered during bouts of Diner Dash!

Cooking Mana: the cell phone version is slated to hit sometime in ‘08

Jungle Hunt coming to Sprint mobile phones… um, OK?

by the hammer of Dan Zuccarelli!

Jeez, talk about a blast from the past. Jungle Hunt hit the arcades 25 years ago, and back then it cost you .25 cents to play a game. Now? $1.99 a month or $5.99 for unlimited play. This is one of those nostalgia moments where you used to love the game back in the day, so you buy it and play it and think to yourself…. yep, that’s Jungle Hunt. Then you put it away and move on.

Mega Man 2 Mobile: The Summer of Awesome Continues

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

megamancosplay.jpgIt’s getting to the point where it’s not even worth mentioning all of the other awesome mobile news that’s hit this month — there’s just getting to be too much of it. Check out our mobile category archive if you want to see what other awesome mobile news has been announced lately. But todays news? Todays news trumps everything.

Mega Man 2, considered by most to be the high point of the Mega Man franchise and one of the greatest 2D side-scrollers ever released, hit mobile phones yesterday. If you haven’t played this game you need to turn in your gamer card immediately. I expect to see it and a full jar of urine on my desk first thing in the morning.

As psyched as we are about mobile games this summer and as psyched as we are about Mega Man 2, I can’t help but think that if this is your first time with the Blue Bomber you might want to pick up the Anniversary Collection that came out for consoles a few years back instead. This is going to be a great release for anyone already familiar with the series, but if you’re not you’re probably going to want to have your first MM experience on something the size of a PSP or larger — but that’s just my two cents.

The Incredible Machine …is your cell phone?

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

incrmac3.jpgIf we were going to remember this summer as anything, it would have to be as “The Summer of Mobile Games.” All of the classics seem to be coming back in dialable form: Leisure Suit Larry, Miner 2049′er, and now The Incredible Machine. Seriously — can it get any better? Someone finally realized old DOS gaming = new mobile gaming, and I couldn’t be happier.

In case you were living under a rock in the early 90’s, The Incredible Machine was every PC gamer’s favorite puzzler. I still have friends that swear by this thing. The concept is simple, and the gameplay is excruciatingly fun: you’re given a grouping of random goodies and a simple task to perform like putting a ball in a box. You’ll need to make an insanely complex device out of all of the items included to accomplish the task. Sound cool yet? Well you can pick it up today. The Incredible Machine hit cell phones across America earlier this week.

Now if we could only get Monkey Island in our pockets, Dan would wreck his cell phone with leakage.

2049er in 2007 (aka how to fit 1984 in your pocket without strectching the fabric)

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

miner2049er.jpg

Ooohh!! Advertising featuring the consumption of moonshine? The ESRB’s not going to be happy about that one.

Time for me to show my age. Miner2049′er was a big deal platformer back in 1984, starting on the Atari in late ‘83 and going cross-platform the following year. According to the press release, it beat out Donkey Kong for Game of the Year. No idea how they measured that one back then — sales maybe? Regardless, Miner 2049′er was always a hoot and I always found it kind of a noodle scratcher that we never saw it return, even if only in a prettied up 2D GBA port. It looks like somebody had heard my ponderings, as Miner 2049′er should be hitting mobile phones as we speak.

In addition to the original game, there’s a second version that includes a complete graphical makeover and all new levels. It really is two games for the price of one. It’s times like this I wish I had a cell phone that could play games that didn’t suck or a service provider that offered them. I’d rank this right up there with the return of Leisure Suit Larry and the gorgeous revamp of Burgertime last year. If it keeps up like this, we may have to call this the golden age of mobile games. Now if only they’d release Halloween Harry
