3 Reasons to Return to the World of Fallout

by the hammer of Adam Dodd!

As if I needed another reason (or three for that matter) to sink more hours into Fallout 3; the Gaming Gods recently gave us three new screens from the upcoming Fallout 3 DLC that will be released for the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game.

The first of the DLC will be ‘Operation: Anchorage’.  Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders.

Operation: Anchorage is scheduled for release this month

Multiwinia Co-op Details & Launch Date

by the hammer of Kevin Alexander!

As I mentioned Monday in my preview of Multiwinia there’s going to be online co-op included in the title that launches “this fall”. I contacted Introversion to clear up the details and here’s what they had to say:

We’re due to launch on September 19th. There will be a vast choice of competitive maps available to play across the 6 modes and co-op maps are available on three of the game modes. Maps will range from 2, 3 to 4-player – all the co-op maps will be 4 player.

That date is confirmed for the PC launch on Steam, UK retail and their own store. Darwinia+ will be hitting XBLA later this year and they’re still trying to nail down retail releases outside of the UK. We’ll check back in when we find out more.

I For One Welcome Our New Hair Band Overlords: Mötley Crüe Debut New Single via Rock Band, Cock Punch Def Leppard

by the hammer of Kevin Alexander!

It\'s the Crüe Bitches!

When I was growing up music got into my veins early. I’d thumb through all my family’s various 8 Tracks and Albums looking for the ones with cool covers and finding songs that I liked. Soon MTV was born and I would spend all day watching waiting for them to finally play the video for “Thriller”. It was a little later into grade school that I first fell in love with the guitar (not that I more than a few chords outside of Rock Band or Guitar Hero) which lead to my love of hair metal. I listened to it all: Dokken, Skid Row, Poison, Slaughter, Ratt, Cinderella and especially Mötley Crüe. Those guys were fucking EVIL when I was nine, and I loved it.

You’re not here to read about these minute details of my adolescence so I’ll get on with it.

Hot on the heals of Def Leppard announcing their intention to debut a new single via Guitar Hero The Crüe come out of nowhere and announce that they intend to be the first band to do this and release their new single “Saints Of Los Angeles” via Rock Band starting TODAY (for 360 owners, Thursday for PS3 as usual). I have yet to hear it, as I’ve grown a little wary of post-Dr. Feelgood Mötley Crüe but I might spend the 80 points to support this new marketing scheme.

If you’re a fan of something like Behind The Music and you don’t care who it’s about I highly suggest picking up the band’s autobiography The Dirt, it’s a great read.

If that is realtime… ye gods.

WiiWare Getting Invaded By Strong Bad & Co.

by the hammer of Kevin Alexander!

Telltale will be bringing a Home Star Runner game to the upcoming WiiWare service (and PC).

If that isn’t my favorite sentence I’ve ever written on this blog, I don’t know what is. Here’s the second coolest one ever: It’s going to be called Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People (or SBCG4AP). If you’re unfamiliar with the HSR universe you best learn yourself, son.

The game won’t be ready for the launch of the service, but should hit some time in June. I think I finally found a reason to buy a Wii, of course, I could always play it on PC…

Bogart Your Burnout

by the hammer of Ryan Hewson!

Bogart, baby

I feel bad for Bogart. I mean, he was a famous actor and everything, and probably got laid a lot, but it’s gotta suck to have your namesake equated with the inappropriate consumption of communal marijuana. What did he do to deserve that?

Criterion is doing their part to help the guy out. The forthcoming patch for Burnout Paradise is called Bogart. Here’s the full list of changes, and it’s a biggie. I’m particularly happy to see the dropped-controller exploit and low-speed takedowns addressed. It should roll out on both Live and PSN on April 24th.

Keep in mind this is not the same as the announced DLC, which should add another island and some more cars to the mix. Rumour mill says it will be free. Nice if true. There’s a little preview video here of the work-in-progress.

A hail of bullet-points after the jump.

New PlayStation Store Revealed, Launches April 15

by the hammer of Ryan Hewson!

Sony has let the cat out of the bag, or at least one particular cat. (The others are still suffocating in a corner. Sony likes to keep lots of cats in bags.)

The new PlayStation Store:

new PSN Store

According to CVG and Eurogamer, the new store is set to launch April 15. There is a downside: Sony says there will be no store updates for the two weeks prior, so we can’t expect any new content on April 3rd or April 10th. If the leaked PSN release list making the rounds is correct (some of this is confirmed on the PS Blog), we should see Warhawk’s Operation Broken Mirror expansion pack and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue debut in tandem with the store. Other potentials include a Super Stardust HD add-on, Dark Mist, and maybe a Resistance 2 trailer.

Looking at the released screens, I note that there is navigational use of the SELECT button. This tells me that this is no longer a web-based front end but rather an actual PS3 application, which means it should be snappier. The design certainly leans more heavily toward a console game’s menu interface than v1 of the store, by using button highlights rather than a pointer. I do wish they had found some way of using a letterbox television’s space more appropriately – the proportions look rigid and locked to 4:3 safe area. (I refer now to Kevin’s erudite explanation of television overscan and title-safe area in our latest podcast, coming soon.)

(UPDATE – Harmonix says the PSN hiatus will also stop downloads in the in-game PS3 Rock Band store. “Still Alive” comes out this week! Curses!)
