Review: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness

by the hammer of A Special Guest!

[A special guest appears! Friend of the site and Poke-maniac Louis Taylor takes a look at Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness]

Chunsoft does it again! Featuring a breakthrough combat system, compelling dialog, epic music and animation quality graphics, wait wait, sorry, wrong game. Nah, this is just more of the same (read: stolen and unoriginal) stuff we’re used to playing. Chunsoft released two more mystery dungeon last week, each as lackluster and tired as the two released in 2006. Continue Reading »

Trauma Center Specialists Right Up Your Alley

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

This would probably be a very interesting addition to the series, don’t you think? Stick it to the man (or woman) in this game as a part of your medical practice and reap the rewards of knowing you did your very best. I can’t help but wonder how the DS stylus would be implemented, what things would look like and how many interesting situations you would run into. Anyways, that’s all I’m going to write for now before my mind takes a dive into the deep end of the gutter. Feel free to dive in on my behalf in the comments.

Atlus Releases New Trauma Center: Under The Knife 2 Screens

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

Just as the title indicates, we have new screenshots for Atlus’ sequel to Trauma Center on the Nintendo DS. I never played the original on the DS, but I absolutely loved TC: Second Opinion on the Wii (yes, I know it was a remake). Trauma Center: New Blood never made its way into my Wii, but I hope to remedy that in the near future. Anyways, the screenshots are after the jump. Things are looking good so far and I can’t wait to see what else the fine folks at Atlus can churn out in the coming weeks. Enjoy.

Aspyr Bringing SAT Prep To DS

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

Seriously, it\'s that big.

Aspyr Studios, based here in Austin, has brought games to different platforms for a while now but has yet to release anything of its own. That all will change with a ‘game’ for the Nintendo DS that seeks to help students prepare for the dreaded SAT. Ted Stalloh, the executive vice president of publishing at Aspyr, said that the company brought the idea of this game to Kaplan, Inc. (the company that is responsible for all forms of test prep materials) a year ago. An article in the Austin-American Statesman points to the success of Brain Age, Big Brain Academy and, more recently, Professor Layton and the Curious Village (how I love it!) to show that academic titles have done well on the handheld.

The game is slated to come out later this year and will consist of mini-games rather than the multiple choice questions you might be used to if you’ve ever gone through one of those test prep discs often found inside prep books. In case you are wondering, the writing portion of the SAT will not be addressed. In fact, Stalloh made it a point to say that the game is not intended to replace the standard test preparation materials we have all come to know and love, but rather to compliment it.

I can tell you it already sounds more enjoyable than those wonderful QuickTime animated kiddies telling me how fun the test is. If something like this was out when I was in high school, I might have picked it up. This being Aspyr’s first original title, I wish them the best of luck and look forward to seeing how it all turns out. For more information, make the jump.
