Wii-kly Virtual Console Update: 09/08/08

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

Homoerotica, muscle men and the devouring of protein are on Nintendo’s agenda this week as Cho Aniki (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 900 Wii Points) makes its way to the North American Virtual Console. I’ve been waiting for this one for a VERY long time and it will be an instant purchase when I get home tonight. In case you aren’t familiar with the series, Cho Aniki is a shoot-’em-up that features two, muscled men with a hole in the top of their head from where they shoot stuff. They eat the protein of their fallen enemies to grow stronger. Thankfully, the visuals are as outrageous as the rest of the game. Good times!

If those two oiled up muscle gods aren’t your thing, try this other TurboGrafx16 game called Final Soldier (700 Wii points). It’s another shmup that I have not had the chance to play. Can any one of you recommend it? I’ve heard of it, just never played it.

As for WiiWare, Groovin’ Blocks (800 Wii Points) is a rhythm based puzzle game of sorts. I know next to nothing about this game, so you might want to make the jump to read the description for it, as well as the others.

So, who’s buying what?

Star Parodier hits the Virtual Console: A closer look

by the hammer of Jim Squires!

For the most part, Virtual Console releases aren’t something to get excited about any more. Last week’s release of the Master System version of Sonic should be proof of that. But this week? This week we’ve got something special.

Star Parodier is a Turbo-Grafx 16 CD import that pokes fun at Hudson’s own long-running Star Soldier series. Just about every Star Soldier out there has made it’s way to the Virtual Console (and even a new one on WiiWare), so it’s only fitting that Parodier makes it way onto the service.

Parodier features three ships — a super-deformed version of the series classic ship, Bomberman, and a flying PC-Engine (the Japanese version of the TG16). The visuals are beyond cute, and I can’t help but notice a few Mario-ism’s included in there as well. The video above shows small mushrooms on the ground that look awfully familiar, as well as some pills scattered across the screen that look like they might have been prescribed by one Dr. Mario.

I’ll be honest — this is the first VC title I’ve considered picking up in a long time. First though I think I may pick up WiiWare’s Star Soldier R. I think I want a proper SS experience before dabbling in the world of the silly. Star Parodier will set you back 900 points.

Wii-kly Virtual Console Update: 08/11/08

by the hammer of Tim Horn!

More Virtual Console goodness comes to the Wii this week. Sadly, the only game on this week’s VC list that I’ve heard of is Star Parodier (TurboGrafx 16 CD-ROM, 900 Wii Points) and I’ve yet to ever play this spoof of Star Soldier. The other VC item for the day is a pool game called, Break In (TurboGrafx 16, 700 Wii Points). As for WiiWare, Strong Bad Episode 1: Homestar Ruiner (1,000 Wii Points) makes an appearance for Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People. You can check out Jim’s review of it just below.

That’s about all there is to say for this week’s short-n’-sweet update. For more details, make the jump.
